2012 Week 12 – Buenos Aires, Argentina, Special Bucket Challenges!

Bucket Challenge: 5 Challenges to accomplish while visiting Argentina
(Ending 6th May 2012)

With a new job opportunity, we are going to stay in Buenos Aires Argentina for a month!! It is a great opportunity graced upon us :) It is a new experience for both us, as we have not been to Argentina before, nor any countries located in South America.

We did some homework about the country, places to go, things to do and food to eat! Some information to share below (extracted from Lonely Planet)

Iguazu Falls

Argentina has gorgeous landscapes, cosmopolitan cities and lively culture. It is a traveler’s paradise. It stretches almost 3500km from Bolivia to the tip of South America. It is almost the size of India. There are mountains, waterfalls, glacier and shopping malls! Many opportunities to learn Spanish, tango and get to know the locals. Not to mention delicious steaks and busy night life.

So while we are there in Argentina for a month, we have come up specific bucket challenges for Argentina :) (Actually the fact of being there is already a completion of one long-term bucket challenge of ours!!)

1. Take tango lessons and spend good quality fun time as a couple together!
2. Learn how to speak basic Spanish (at least 200 words)
3. Visit IGUAZU FALLS

Saltenas

4. Take cooking lesson and learn how to make local food (Saltenas)
5. Visit EL CALAFATE and THE PERITO MORENO GLACIER in Patagonia

Patagonia

Checked (on our Bucket List) – Overnight on a Shaky Boat!

Shaky home for the night (cannot believe she puked ...)

This is the boat which we spent a night. It is parked at Bouveret harbor in Switzerland.

The night was cold and snowy. The boat looked small from outside. To our surprises, inside was quite warm, cosy and spacious. There are folding tables, a sink with working space and even a chemical toilet!

Just wake up, morning outside the boat.

The sailing boat was anchored inside the harbor for our night stay. The water was relatively calm, but still shake constantly and gently left and right. It took us a while to get used to the movements, especially after Cindy emptied out her full stomach after a good buffet. At the beginning, we tried to sleep with the waviness of the water, sound of the wind (got stronger as the night darken) and the crackling sound of the ropes hitting the poles. Once when we used to the regular sounds, funny thing was, we both woke up when there was total silence, wondering what had just happened? It was not an easy night to start. Luckily, at the end, we slept like babies until the owner of the boat woke us up with hot breakfast!

.

In the morning, there was much more snow than the night before! We were very surprised to see how beautiful the place is in the day light! We took some pictures and left for home. We may have left the boat and the place behind, but certainly the experience was still with us!! We couldn’t help on feeling the wavy feelings within us, as if we were still on the boat. We felt it on the train, on the sofa at home, even while we were lying on the bed, and still feel like as if we were on the boat! Everything was shaking a little (feel like to puke a little.. poor Cindy..)

Here is the view from the port looking towards the inland.

This experience was special and sensory. It is definitely worth it giving a try! Another tick to our bucket list challenges! Cindy and Loic

2012 Week 3 – Stop Postponing Your Trip!!

Bucket Challenge: Go where you always wanted or need to go!!
(Ending Sunday 22th January 2012)

Is there a place or places that you always wanted or dream to go, but there are always some reasons, so that you still have not yet visited the places?? Or is there a trip or some trips that you have promised your family, friends or even to yourself to take, but just haven’t got around to it?? Think about these places and trips! Ask yourself: When will be the BEST TIME other than NOW??

Actually there is no so-called BEST TIME as we all know it!! NOW is always the BEST TIME.

This week challenge is to ask you: take a deep breath and JUST DO IT!! Book a trip right now and JUST GO! Better yet, JUST GO RIGHT TODAY!! As crazy and unplanned as it seems, just let yourself go once without thinking, worrying it too much, over-planning the trip, or let the ‘obstacles’ and ‘excusing’ successfully stop you. You want to go to these places, aren’t you?? You promised to go, isn’t it? Then what are you waiting for??

Challenge: Stop postponing your trip or promises!
Take-off a trip to where you always want to go, need to go or first comes in mind!! You owe it to yourself! Or to your family or friends!

Extra Challenge:

Other than vacation type of trips, how about trips like visiting parents or trips you know you need to go, but have been avoiding (i.i. dental, body check-up or others…). Perhaps even soul-searching trip!

Goals:

To break the circle of postponing! Just be action-oriented and JUST DOOOOO IT!!
Time required: 3-hours to a weekend or more
Energy level: Low to medium
Preparation: Book a trip, plan nothing, prepare your mind – just have fun!

Just did it!! We have booked a trip to Bilbao for this weekend :) A tick in Our 2012 (Resolutions) Project Actions and Progress!! I always wanted to go visit Guggenheim museum since at least 10 years ago… The urge is getting stronger and stronger lately (not exactly knowing the reason). And Thandor always want to do a culture trip. Voila, here we go!!

Feedback on Participating Global Entrepreneurship Week

Let me begin with a great video which describes the Start-Up Weekend workshop.
The meaning of being an entrenpreneur.

During the Global Entrepreneuship Week, there were more than 60 Start-Up Weekend workshops and activities taking place in different cities all around the world. I have chosen the closest workshop to attend – Start-Up Weekend Genève!

All the people participated in Geneva session were gathered to an auditorium and given one-minute to present their ideas. 40 people presented their ideas out of a total 140 participants. I have to say all of ideas were well delivered.

I also gave my one-minute speech and it was quite a challenge for me. To clearly explain why my idea was the best simply in one minute and in front of 140 participants when my hands were shaking and words were running in and out of my mouth disorderly, and yet I survived. They got the message.

After everyone has taken the turn, it was time to vote for the best 15 ideas. I felt like as if spending 30 minutes in a busy fish market. See for yourself in the pictures below (notice the wrong picture yet?).

Each participant was given 3 Steve Job Bill to give to (vote for) the idea(s) they like the most. After 30 crazy minutes, the judge counted the bills per idea/project and the top 15 ideas were announced. Luckily my idea was in the best top 15 :)

All participants were divided into the 15 groups and from this point onward, all teams went mad and hit on full power to realize their group ideas! Just to give you an idea on how crazy and intensive we were:

Teams were grouped around 19pm Friday and worked until 2am in the morning. On Saturday, teams started at 8am and continued until 2am again. On Sunday, teams worked from 8am until 5pm when the first final presentation started. Depending on the team strategies and workload allocation, some of us worked around 34 hours in a single weekend, but most people preferred to have a good night sleep and allowed more time to sleep. It was a good thing we had unlimited energy drink supply! :P

In these three days, we had 16 coaches with all different background giving us guidance and advises. They did a great job at helping the teams. However, some participiants followed coaches’ directions without thinking it through themselves.

My idea went through various build, challenge, break down and rebuild phases. At each iteration, the idea was evolving, changing, transforming until something wonderful has appeared! At the end, only few original elements was incorporated in the final product. The product has evolved to something quite different and in fact even better!

This is the beauty of a Start-Up Weekend workshop where ideas were challenged, transformed and evolved with a group of amazing diversified individuals, coaches together with their expertise, visions and solutions.

Then I realized at that moment, what most important here is not the development of the idea, but the learning and the development of the team itself.

Following 3 days of hard work came the final presentation. It was a 4 minutes long presentation and 7 minutes for jury’s open questions.

Unfortunately our idea did not win the top best 3 ideas, but we will continue. Last year winning team did no further improvement nor implementation, despite the fact that they won and they had adequate resources and qualification needed in their team.

In fact, 30% of the projects developed in the entrepreneurship weekend workshop continue after the workshop. Only with continuous actions and efforts, things will then happen, irrespective winning the project or not. If nothing is done, nothing will happened!

Bellow is the final speech from the winning team:
